Some make no whine and some scream. The norm however is most will make noise in first and fifth due to these being spur cut. The rest are helical and usually silent. Try 75/140 gear oil to quiet it down some.

I only hear whining from the wife, if I downshift to first I hear it ,but not when accelerating. Try louder pipes!or heavier gear oil like da man said!

Spur cut 5th gear noise, is the norm......... try Amsoil 75-90 Severe Gear  \\; it eliminated about 90% of the noise in my 07 FXD

Spur cut means straight gears and helical cut means angular gears. The straight gears are always more noisy
than the angular gears. Mine has the whine in 1st and 5th also but I did not buy a Harley because it was
going to be quiet.
