I can top both of those hard luck stories. I bought mine in september almost dead stock, pristine garage condition w/ 14k on the odo. Rode less than 200 miles and oil lite came on. Found metal in cam chest and oil pan. Had to tear it down all the way (split cases and pulled flywheels) and do a complete rebuild.
All is good now though, and fortunately I live in Fla, so I'm riding right now. Feel for you guys up north, this winter has been a bitch!
Rhd, you can join the Dying Breed MC, but our "clubhouse" is over in the EVO section, lol. Most guys in the dyna section ride twinkies...
I got my '90 FXLR (w/24000mi.) in Oct.
Mikuni 42mm - Andrews EV27 cam - SE air intake - drag pipes and dyno tuned.
I'm doing maintenance and some mods this winter like bars and suspension.

I haven't gotten that far yet. Hoping the engine is okay it's got 40k in it. It was a nice surprise to find out it has slid down the road though. Missed the road rash when I bought it. Poor lighting. The sellers story was so believable I never suspected anything. All the road rash has been removed now though. I'm paranoid the frame is going to be tweaked.
