After getting to Houston you'll probably find you'd rather be in San Diego. \\;(just kidding...sort of) \\; If I were you I'd go to the regional sections of the forum for the areas you're passing through and ask the locals to recommend routes and places to see. \\; Riding through the desert can get boring, so maybe there are some good alternate routes. \\; How much time have you allowed for this trip?
Hey Redbeard, I do enjoy San Diego, but I love Texas, and ready to get home. \\; I planned on taking 3 days, getting to Tucson the first night, then the next day stop at el paso and visit Barnetts Harley Davidson, and end up close to fort stockton, then the last day, ease on into college station and rest a few days with a pretty girl I know, then make the quick trip into Houston and see tyhe family.
'slinger: make sure you put a 2.5 gallon gas can on the back of your scoot for the trip. I made that same journey many, many moons ago in a car, but going through the mountains before hitting the deserts of El Centro there are not a ton of gas staions. Remember, your range is only 160-200 miles depending on your riding habits, and going through those mountains, you're going to burn way more gas than you would have thought. That portable gas can (plastic bottle nowadays) just may mean the difference between an unexpected long roadside stop, and a comfortable night's sleep in a \\;motel.
Is there anything that exemplifies what riding is about than what youre planning on doing? I don't think so. Welcome home,thank you, and enjoy every blast of wind of you feel.
If you have the time, I would recommend a trip through mexico. \\; I did that leg starting from El Paso to Tijuana, Rocky Point is great this time of year! \\;
 \\;
As mentioned above if you go from SD to Yuma, do it in the middle of the day. \\; I did it from Yuma to SD in the late afternoon early evening and it was the worst stretch of ride I've ever done (wind) the mountains were miserable
