Default Rear Axle Removal

O.K. Guys and Girls here is the situation...I am trying to put a new wheel on the Bob. I have everything loose and am trying to tap out the axle. The key word here is trying..no matter what I do it will not move laterally. There is no tension on the axle at all. It seems to be hung up on the rear brake. I have removed the pads so it can move around but it will not slide out. I can turn the axle by hand but still it will not slide out.&nbsp\\; Any suggestions or magic bullets ? I'm stumped. The dealer mech, who had it off last, says he put anti-seize on it so it should be easy. Any suggeations ? HELP !!!

Had the same problem at my first tire change. I beat on the ****er so hard I split the wheel spacer in half and ruined the threads on the axle. The moco didn't put enough anti-seize on the axle. Luckily my dealer got me a new axle, spacer and changed the wheel bearings under warranty. Service manager said they had a wheel they had to cut the axle and press it out wtf! Gotta love the moco! Try using a peice of copper grounding rod and a big ****ing hammer, just don"t miss(ouch). The copper won't hurt the steel axle. Good luck man![hr]

A realy big rubber mallet or a dead blow hammer worked for me. The first time I removed it it mine was hard also. The second time was no problem.

A couple of good ideas. The axle has not moved so it is still sticking out the left side. I have hosed it with Sea Foam oil so maybe tomorrow it will give up. A dead blow hammer (hard plastic or rawhide) is a good idea. I have been using a rubber mallot and ocasionally taping on it with a claw hammer. I have a big ball peen and a 5lb sledge hammer and have been tempted but so far I haven't used then, yet. Thanks guys.

Sounds like the seals for the rear wheel bearings took a dump and the axle is siezed to it. get another nut to put on it,yes 2 it is there to hammer on, and swing away with a sledge.New bearings will be needed and machiine down the axel,it will be swelled .Dave...

Dave- Could I turn the axle by hand if the bearings were gone ? Good suggestion on the double nuts and I think new axle will be in order. Thanks...

The axle will turn but will be siezed to the inside sleeve of the bearing. It will come out but it will take awhile if it is siezed. When metal gets rust to form it expands. If what I'm saying is true you can machine the axle(it will be cheaper).

Stop tapping on it and start pounding on it instead.&nbsp\\; Mine took some persuading to get out and it wasn't siezed or rusted to anything.&nbsp\\; I slathered it with anti-sieze when I put it back in and could have pushed it back through with 1 finger.

ooh ya this sucks! i had the same thing... i put a punch in the divit in the axel, then poped the HELL out of it with a hammer, use a punch so you do not damage the threads with a hammer... the mallet did not cut it when i did it. BE SURE TO USE ANIT SEAZE when you re install
