So, last night I was at the stealer....
...and saw what they paid for the FXDWGI from the MOCO.....

my chest hurts.....

I paid 18,966 w/ mini detachable backrest and bob tail rack
This price is out the door.....includes title, tax, reg, prep and parts installed....OUT THE DOOR.

They paid for the bike 17,130...... difference of 1836..... about 10%

Take a look at invoice prices verses MSRP on the car sites like NADA.com and KBB.com and see how you did there

I don't think you got taken at all. Look at your dealership and what it costs to run it. Now multiply the number of bikes they sell per year x's the number you quoted. It's obvious that they make most of their money on accessories.

You can't add taxes into that difference because the dealer doesn't see a dime of that. You cut that out along with what the new parts and labor cost (since this should be considered seperately) and you will see that they are not making a whole heck of alot on that bike.

Stealer does not pay taxes on anything they buy for resail. Another thing to think about - In the auto industry, invoice price is not necessarily what the dealer pays for the car. They get incentives from the manufacturer and actually pay far less than invoice. I would guess that Harley dealers operate similarly, but that is just a guess.

I would say you did ok. If the otd price was 10% over their price their actual profit is less than that because the state gets the tax and license money, plus shop time for the back rest and rack. I don't know how HD does it, but with cars the invoice price doesn't reflect what they actually paid because they get incentives from the factory that you or I will never see. It makes a good sales gimmick and it's a nice starting point but it doesn't mean a lot realisticaly.

Just crunching numbers off HD's website shows

$17205 List for two-tone FXDWG
+ $100 for EFI.
+ $275 for freight
+ $1582 sales tax @ 9 %
+ approx. $ 461 parts and labor @ $70. p/h + 9 % sales tax
+ $50 at least for license and paperwork

All that added together shows around $19,600., I don't know what your sales tax and licensing fee structures are like but just going by the prices off the web site I'd say you made out like a fat rat.

It looks like you did ok. The dealers are not going to give you a bike. I do not believe the invoices they show you, or leave for you to see. Like the others said, in the auto/truck industry, the dealers get kickbacks and things we will never know. I hate buying vehicles because you always feel like you got ripped off. This is how I look at it now. You had an idea of what you were willing to pay. If you got your bike cheaper you made out ok, if you paid what you thought you would, you were ready for that. If you did not like the price you could have walked away.

I don't see the problem. Should they not make a profit on the bike? Should they not make enough money to pay their overhead, their employees, their electric bill, phone bill, water bill, advertising expenses, building upkeep, insurance? Any idea what it may cost to operate a business?
