Not to follow your threadjack here Mr. Wilson, but I think I'm getting around 38-40 miles, although that may change for the worse after I put the XIED's on tonight. As far as what bike to get Mikie, maybe the FAT BOB, although I don't know why...
Mikie,
I also couldn't decide between the Super Glide Custom and the Fat Bob back in April. I asked the sales person, whom I've known for several years, which one would have a better resale/trade in vale. With out hesitation she said, "The Fat Bob".
I've riden the Fat Bob for 8000 miles, it is absolutly amazing how it handles!
The Super Glide Custom, in my opinion, is a very nice looking-classic style motorcycle... lots of factory chrome, laced wheels, handle bars, etc. The Fat Bob is built for the road and lots of it! The 130mm front wheel, dual front brakes and drag bars makes it handle like a Sportster on steriods!
The Hot Springs dealer gave me a price of $900 and $600 for leather saddle bags to fit the Fat Bob. Man, I cant believe it, $900! I am sure that does not include tax, blinker relocate kit, and labor. I may think about a Heritage Classic, but the price for this is $19,800. Since these Softails have rigid mount motors, is there any difference in vibration between the Heritage Softail and Fat Bob? The dealer said there was not. Thanks for the help and advice. Oh, I passed my MC written driver license test this morning. One step closer.

I'm in the same boat as you, struggling to decide on my first HD. I can weigh in on the vibration question though. The Softails have a rigid mount, counterbalanced motor. I test rode a Fat Boy, a Heritage Classic, and a Dyna Superglide. The Dyna did vibrate more than the softails. The softails were VERY calm and smooth at idle. The Dyna lets you know it's running, but not annoyingly so.
There are subtle differences between the two bikes, if you look at the spec's the differences are, the Custom has, Double seat, more chrome, higher seat position, higher ground clearance, Bigger tank, all minimal, price is the same, now it comes down to personnel preferences, I liked the chrome, not much in it and at the end of the day go with the heart, no matter what you decide, you will be smiling when you ride out the shop good luck and good riding.
MZBuckeye , one of my best friends owns three Harleys, and he has been riding motor cycles most all his life. He said a guy brought a Softail over to his house one day, and my friend rode it. He said it was one of the smoothest best riding Harley he has ever ridden.
Thanks guys for the comments and advice. Ill let you all know what I end up with.
