Anyone know if the stock springs on my 02 FXD are progressively wound? Trying to get a handle on this. The term progressive is a type of spring (which is progressively wound) and also a brand. Correct? Reason for asking is my springs are progressively wound, but I don't know if they are stock or not.(Also, there seems to be spacers provided in the progressive kits and I have none)
My stock springs in the 05 39mm front end are not progressive wound...(least don't look it to me)..also the ones that came out of my 41mm forks I just installed are not as well... the ones I put in my 41mm forks are progressive the company...they are progressive wound.. the springs from progressive are shorter than the stock springs and the spacer is designed to be cut to stick out a little above the fork top to provide the preload. You can cut to a different length to give more or less preload.
my stock springs had no spacer as well.
Well, I can kinda answer it....I'm pretty sure your stock springs wouldn't be progressive......but yes, progressives are a type of spring, but is also the name of a popular bike shock company.
The stock springs are not progressive wound.
The spacer Progressive provides in the standard kit is about 2" in length and will set the preload. Longer spacer would preload the springs more.
I'm guessing the previous owner of your bike may have used the lowering kit.
How does the bike ride? Hard or soft when hitting bumps? Any bottoming out?
So I guess the previous owner installed aftermarket springs. Guess I'll contact Progressive and see if I need the spacers or not.
do your springs stick out the fork tubes when the cap is off?
if so then you have a spring should be designed to be compressed by the top cap to set the preload(like the stock one). you should not need spacers in this instance...
my progressive springs do not compress from the top cap(shorter than stock ones). this is where the spacer comes in.
