on the Flange nuts that hold the exhaust pipe? Mine keep loosening up. I've been told locktite eats up the threads. If yes, Which color? If no, any ideas what to use to keep these nuts tight?
Use pinched lock nuts heat will melt locktite and loose usefullness heat is what you use to get parts loose. If no pinch nuts are around double nut if possiable.JMO
I used blue Loctite for my exhaust clamps. Here are the specs for blue Loctite from the web site:
- Locks threaded fasteners against vibration loosening
- Ideal for nut and bolt applications 1/4" to 3/4" (6mm to 20mm)
- Prevents threads from rusting and leaking
- Removable with hand tools for easy disassembly
- Temperature range: -65 degrees to 300 degrees Fahrenheit (-54 degrees to 149 degrees Celsius)
I probably wouldn't use locktite. A buddy who runs a powercoat business just did a rim that for some reason the guy used blue locktite on the nipples and it made a huge mess when heated for curing. It couldn't handle 390 degrees for 10 minutes, so I doubt it will handle higher exhaust temps for hours. Pinch nuts or double nutting is what you want. IMHO
The exhaust flanges get a lot hotter than 300 degrees. It's probably closer to 1200-1400 degrees. Locktite is useless at those temps. Self locking nuts without the nylon insert or double nuts will work.
I saw high temp loctite at the auto parts store the other day. I don't think it would go 1200 - 1400 degrees but I am going to check on that the next time I go there. I too would double nut.
