Here is my situation, all advice appreciated. I have a buddy, (seriously, not me, I'm happy with my front end), who wants to powdercoat the front end of his 08 Bob. For some reason, (I started servicing bikes to help friends out), I am the one people come to for bike work, mainly services and add ons. I'm looking for advice and input on the front end project. I've done about 10-15 services and added lots of crap to bikes, but not sure if I'm up for this challenge. Most importantly, I don't want my friends bike in my garage, showing up to work, with him telling everyone we work with what a jackass I am. Thanks in advance.
it's not a challenge the service manual has diagrams for the front end...
I guess he just wants the trees done... so take off wheel... take off fork tube assembly then bars, clamps, etc then unbolt and remove. one thing if you turn that master cylinder anyway but up you will find yourself needing to bleed the front brake which will suk for sure.
Its not hard at all just get a service manual so you have he entire diagram like was said. I did it on my old chop which was a Big Bear and all I had was a DVD it took me about 2 hours to take the front end apart. Remove front wheel, brakes, unscrew the legs then just take the legs apart dust covers bushings springs drain the oil etc etc and send the lowers to get powdered then take the trees off and all bearings etc. I paid for tree's, risers, lower legs $100 for gloss black.. I did the choppers inc risers in black and left the caps chrome they came out killer I think anyway
that is how you do it to protec the paint! nice work LOS... i do the same have about 2 cases of blue painters tape! the front end is crazy easy to do! what is he going to powder? lower legs, trees ? what is he planning on doing?

Thaks Bro... Yeah and that nice chrome Baker... Blue tape is your friend.. Although as the beers kept coming the less blue tape you know...
Yeah like ^^^^ said it depends on what he wants to powder. But it aint hard at all as for how long the bike is gonna be in your garage well depends on how quick you get your powder back but assemble on the front end isn't hard.. Also what color does he want to powder??
I am having my Trees and light housing powder coated (should be back and totally installed by end of this week) gloss black to match my lowers on my Fat Bob. I'll post some pics this weekend if everything goes well.
As for your worry about being able to do the work or not. I would say only do what you feel comfortable with. I stopped doing side work for friends, co-workers, and family a long time ago (I am a computer guy). It got to be a hassle getting blamed for shotty workmanship and the computer not working right "ever since it got worked on by you". Even though what I fixed for them has nothing to do with what's broke now. It's like bringing your car into the mechanic to have the A/C checked then turn around and tell him he broke your trunk lock.
