I have 29,500mi on my 06 WG and love it. I took a 5000k trip last year and have been to the Smoky Mountains twice on it. I ride 500mi a week, not including what i ride on the weekends. I have a QR windshiled and saddle bags. I just added some Kuryakn switchblade pegs for a lil extra comfort on those long rides, but hav't had them long enough to give you my opinion on them.
it is no less suited for long trips than any other Dyna or Softale that doesn't have a windshield or bags
Like others have already mentioned - I've done 400+ mile days, and multi day trips with the wife and a T-bag on the back.
If you don't have a windshield, the wind will beat you up pretty good after a full day out on the road, but that is not an issue exclusive to the Wide Glide
3300 miles from San Antonio, Texas to Milwaukee for the 105th and I was tired, but did fine. Did the trip back in 2 days: 1300+ miles, 25 hours in the saddle. Not as comfy as a bagger, but I was pushing it on the way home. Short days (400 miles) are just fine. I did 600 miles and 750 on the two days home, but that's pushing the limits of my body, which I am feeling right now...the bike did fine.
KTM SCOTT, How do you like those bars? I have been thinking of replacing the mini-apes on mine.
Love 'em! With a 10" ride and 12" pull-back, the hand position ends up being almost the same as with the stock mini apes. I had them done when moco had a recall on the cracking stock bars. Only spent $50 out of pocket including installation. They are Wild-1 model 507 Drags, btw...
Buddy and wife bought a new Wide Glide in 1994. Just sold it last year. They put over 275,000 miles on that bike. I would say they are okay for touring!!!
Don't listen to thier crap. I had a 99 FXDWG I put 15k on it the first year. No windshield, no floorboards just straped on my T-bag and went. NO PROBLEMS
Having done over 800 in a day on my WG, I would say YES, it is perfectly fine for touring. I put over 600 on this past weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it.
You can easily make mod's to better fit you for comfort, so like others have said, forget what others say about not being any good for touring. They have probably never done any distance on one.
