Hey I don't ride a Wideglide but roll in a 04 LR. I have toured on it for the last few years and no problem. I will say its no fun after 90 mph but will run at 80 all day. I just got back from great 1400 mile ride, Tempe, AZ to Taos, NM ride two weeks ago. I have a detachable windshiels and removable Boos Bags. I load my luggage in the passangers seat, lean back on it and rideon!
Any bike that will go highway speeds is good for touring... the rest depends on you... The bike will get there just fine.
Do you need a radio, recliner, espresso machine to be comfy? A windshield? Fairing? Big fluffy seat that massages your *****? It's all about you bro. I know guys who whine about riding their Road Kings more than an hour at a time, and I know guys who will do 1000 miles a day on a sportster...
...it's not can the bike do it, it's what do you need to get it done...

OK, where can I find me on of them big fluffy ball massaging seats?
I'm curious what would make you think you couldn't tour on a wide glide? Granted it's not a dresser and doesn't come with a healthy dose of storage but it's not impossible. Just get yourself a set of saddlebags, and maybe a nice t-bag and your off. Mount the tbag on the passenger seat and you got yourself a nice backrest for miles of cruising comfort.
A friend of mine rode the wheels off of a Wide Glide.............he would take off on three day weekend from Wyoming thru Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, & Colorado. The guy had an iron butt and could ride all day.
Will there be a regular passenger on these trips? If so then a sundowner seat and backrest set up would be in the future. Wife and I took ours over to Milwaukee a few years ago to the motor factory. The non-riders looked my bike over before the baggers, when asked, they said it's almost all motor. The wide glide is a good bike without all the weight. I have a 02 FXD and 05 FXDLI.
