I just picked up a "Windvest" for my Lowrider in Reno. Works great and follows the lines of the bike. Not too big but does the job to keep the wind of my chest and face. Take a look at http://windvest.com/

I think the Windvest looks okay - not sure what size this one is, but a bit smaller would work for me...

PS - not my bike

Anybody know if these things are quick-detachable?

that looks to be a 16" They're somewhat quick detachable - but you need an allen wrench. There are 2 bolts that attach the cross piece of the windvest to the clamps on the handlebars. You'll still have those clamps on when you remove the shield, but you won't have to readjust the screen when you put it back on. Also, if you look close, you can see that he has it at the highest level. Looks like you can adjust it 2" down from where it currently is.

Does the windvest actually block much wind for an open helmet or is it a 'take the wind off the chest' type shield?

I have tried windshields on several bikes and every time I take them back off. I would really love to enjoy the benefits of a WS but I can't handle the buffeting. I wish there was a solution.

Frankly, I don't think the Harley-style windshields hurt the looks at all. I've had people say they didn't even realize mine had a windshield. They are transparent, after all.

I am new at this game (2nd year riding) and my only riding experience is wearing a 3/4 helmut with a full face shield (Norton).

It seems to be a cheap and easy compromise, protecting against all flying objects, especially falling acorns right now here in New England, and cold air.

Have many of you guys tried to get along with this set up alone ? I also like the look of my Fat Bob and don't want to "cage it up". I would think just the face shield would provide adequate protection in most conditions- unless you're moving at 80 mph +. I don't plan to go that fast unless I fall out of a building.

2009 Fat Bob Vivid Black-All stock so far.

That will work for wind in the face but not the pressure on the chest as you hold the handle bars. If you're going "slow" no shield is fine ... but for me the majority of my riding it too and from work on the highway ... yes at 75 to 80 MPH. (I don't leave to go to work a minute before i have too!) So a shield makes the ride comfortable. At 80 MPH with no windshield I'm gripping the the handlebar for dear life!

Default I want a windshield for touring/freeway riding....

but which to get? There is the expensive (>$300) "quick detach" which seems like the one to buy....but also another less expensive model....which is best and why? Obviously, I'm trying to keep Bob's brutal good looks from being ruined by cumbersome brackets.
