IMO the Fat Bob has the perfect look without a windshield. The only problem for me is I'm not one of those that rides to the local watering hole for a while and then to the next and so on. I like to ride all day stopping for gas and food only. By the time I got home on the Bob I was exhausted. I found myself taking the Ultra out and leaving the Fat Bob in the garage. I finally put a detachable standard size windshield on this Saturday and took Bob out. Holy crap, what a difference. I rode that mother all day in the mountains outside of Denver. I didn't want to go home. That bike is a killer ride. The windshield doesn't look all that corney to me anymore. But.......I still think the bike looks better without it.
I've been fighting this same thing and I think I'm about ready to give in. I don't like the looks of the windshield on a Super Glide either but man it sure would be a lot more comfortable sometimes. Especially on a cold winter day. I can't take a lot of cold so I just don't ride a lot when it's cold. A shield sure would help out a lot in that situation.
Have the standard windshield, on my fat bob. I ride 32 miles one way to work, average about 45 mph all the way. Only use it when its cold. I dont think it looks bad at all, plus I was able to put a windshield bag on it, helps with the I-Pass and glasses.
I wouldn't hit the highway without mine. Especially since I switched to a half helmet - the windshield keeps the loudness of the wind down and the rocks, bugs, etc. off my face. It made the difference on my trip to Colorado this summer (from Minot, ND).
To me, the Fat bob is an all-day, long trip bike with the WS on, great scoot-around town bike with it off.
I think most of us agree ... without the shield the Fat Bob looks it's best ... most bikes do. But riding without a wind shield on the highway is WORK. Not to mention the bugs and rocks in the face. I have the same shield as Poisond 08 FatBob and will ONLY take it off on rare days when i'm staying local and it's HOT. But ... I NEVER stay local, I'm not a local watering hole type of guy and 75% of my riding is highway at 80MPH. 80 MPH with no shield is too much work and I don't give a rat's butt how "cool" or "uncool" I look. I'm riding for the enjoyment of riding and I don't enjoy holding on with white knuckles and don't enjoy rocks and bugs in the face. (Not to mention rain which feels like little needles when they hit your face at highway speeds) Maybe someday someone will design a windshield that ADDS to the good looks of a Cruiser? ... I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for one though! :-)
