Cool Fat Bob - black bars & flush mounts

Oh boy, what a job. Having an extra pair of hands (and eyes) made all the difference - thanks benwiggin2. I think it probably took us around 6 hours - taking our time - but it was definitely worth it

I had five projects on the bench, two of which I'll revisit at a later stage. Before removing the tank from the bike, I installed the flush mount fuel gauge and fuel cap. Pretty straight forward job, trickiest part was removing the wires from the connector - sure I could have cut them, as the kit comes with a new plug, but I decided I wanted to keep the old unit just in case.

Then came the handlebars. Without reading the instructions fully I removed all the switch gear and levers from both sides. Thinking the wiring would be disconnected from the switch gear directly - not the case.

Housed in the front of the frame, under the tank, are the handlebar wiring loom connectors - 4 of them, total of 20 wires.

It was pretty figgity removing the wires. Fat fingers are a disadvantage. Luckily we didn't need any special tools - we'll you do need a small probe, but I had one that worked. The other trick that really helped was taking pictures of the wiring configuration before we started pulling it all apart.

Putting everything back together was fairly straight forward. Actually, other than a hiccup with mounting the new left hand diamond grip, things went back together quite smoothly. And I was extremely pleased to see that all the electrics worked again as they should

Okay, enough with the chatter already, lets see some pictures

Thanks again for your help Brock - it'll be way easier when it comes to doing your bike

I was planning on going with the same handlebars; seeing your pictures makes it a no-brainer. Thanks!

(I just might go with the flush caps, too!)

Thumbs up

Thanks for the responses guys.

So I wanted to reply here cause I've had quite a few PM's from folks who said their parts guys told them the black flush mounts would not fit an 08.

I didn't buy these from my local - I reviewed the H-D site for what I thought was the correct item part number, and ordered them online.

There was nothing funky about the instructions, everything matched up as it should, the connector is the same as factory, and the LED appears to work correctly. Having said that, they may not fit your bike if it's any other colour than black denim

Nice!

Do you have photos of the unwired and/or unmounted front turn signals?

I want to see what they look like inside before I pull mine.

Thanks.
