Default Installing forward controls?

How hard is it to install forward controls on a 09 FXD? Money is short, and the dealer claims that it would take 5 hours of work to install ( which is almost as much in labor, as the parts themselves). Would I, who is someone who has not worked on motos before, but wants to learn, have a hard time?

What is involved? what sort of tools are needed?

Don't take it to the dealer. in fact I've only been to the dealer for my 1k mile service and that is it. working on these bikes insnt as though as the dealer makes it seem. Forward controls are a basic install as long as you don't plan to tear into the primary. There is a really good post be one of the members here that explains to detail how to install your forwards in a matter of a couple of hours without having to tear into the tranny. As far as tools, you'll only need the a basic wrench or socket set and good quality allen wrenches... and just take it step by step I'll also recommend getting the manual for your bike. You won't necessarily needed for this project, but after this project you'll gain the confidence to tackle other stuff...

Here comes the standard forum answer....

Buy a service manual.

It's not hard. Just make sure to secure the lever where the mid-mount shift linkage attaches. It can work it's way down and bind your new foward control shift linkage. Not fun when you suddenly can't downshift...

Here is a good link offering some info about how to do the install with the Harley forwards without removing the primary cases. If you have any questions, just ask. There are lots on here who have done this.

Buy the service manual. Did it myself last December. Hardest part is taking the primary cover off and removing the clutch to get the old linkage out and install the new one. Had to fashion a tool to loosen the clutch holding locknut. Took about 4 hours to do. Next time I won't be laying in my driveway working on it from the ground level. It will be inside and on a lift.

I installed an '05 kit with a touring bikes shifter connecting rod. Bought parts from Zannotti's. Left my mid pegs and old lever in place and it took about an hour to install.
Only problem I had was I wish the 05 kit came with a 3/8" thick spacer to use with the bracket that ties the lever to the case.

Easiest and cheapest route IMHO.

Do it yourself!!! Invest in a service manual, whether HD's or Clymers, AND a parts manual! These will save you lots of money in the long run! Not sure whats involved with an 09, but I put them on my 02 and they were not that difficult at all. You shouldn't need any special tools, just a good ratchet set and allen wrench set. If you don't want to get the manual now, and buy the forward controls from HD, they will come with instructions which are real easy to follow.

Don't take primary out, just push mid shift lever in, cap hole with something, I used a Willie G. skull handle cap with some High Temp black silicone.
