honestly... save yourself the time and agrivation... CUT THEM... besides the stock spokes SUCK... get some good stainless spokes... unless you want to keep them and powder them as well... all you have to do is remove the tire... unscrew the nipples on them... they come right off!
you can get stainless pretty cheap! if you are doing that work to your wheels get some good lyndall gold pads... no more dust! easier to keep clean!... as far as tools... i use a ratcheting head wrench to pull mine makes it go faster.. i run around the wheel loosen them all then start to unscrew them... either that or they sell spoke wrenches.. blah blah blah... use a regular wrench
wow, really 'JRK'?....just snip 'em and get some stainless, eh? ....cool....didn't think of that....and indeed, i'll be getting the Lyndall pads- on my list
i was not being a smart ***...stainless are so much easier to maintain than the steel and they look way better... they are really not that bad... I always use Hdwheels.com they rock!
no, no....you took me the wrong way...LOL!....i wasn't mocking you, man
.... seriously, i didn't think to cut them and get better ones....sometimes i just think too much about a project and anticipate it just might be more complicated than it really is
Snipping them works great, unless you like Joe said powder coating them. I powdercoated mine, so I have to take them apart.
Now I assume you will be relacing them yourself. I have a suggestion(s). Take alot of digital pics!! From just about any angle possible. If this is your first lace job, well take your time, and remember the number 4. This is key in lacing your rim.
I wish you all the luck!
JS if you order from Buchanan...make sure you specify polished if you want polished. I had my front wheel built by Black Bike Wheels from scratch (AWESOME by the way) and was just going to have the rear done locally so I pulled it apart (cutting spokes) had the OEM rim and hub powdercoated, ordered Buchanan spokes. The guy who was going to lace it died (god bless) so I sent all my parts back to Black Bike for final assembly. Called me and asked if I wanted the spokes polished...WTF? So I digress, they did it for free but order them the way you want them.
