Default Looking for tips on a DIY 1K service

Ran this thread over in the "General" forum and it spun out into a analysis of friggin' oil flush systems, so I really didn't get any tips. Something tells me I'll have better luck here.

Performing the 1K on the Wide Glide next weekend and I'd like to hear from some members who've been there and have tips on getting the job done.

Service manual should be here tomorrow I'm waiting to read it over before I buy a lift (+ the Dyna adapter) and spoke torque wrench. Those are about only tools I think I'm missing, outside of fluids, filters and o-rings. If I'm missing anything or should be expecting a Dyna-specific issue, I hope one of you will give me a heads up.

I'm going with Amsoil in all three boxes on the recommendation of HDF members, so I'm really looking forward to reading some more tips and advice.

the fluids change is easier if you DON'T use a lift.
the lift would help if you are adjusting the primary chain tension - which you don't need to do on an 07.
a second person is best for holding the bike while you adjust the drive belt tension.
I guess what I'm saying is - take your time, don't buy the lift just for the fluid change, and I can't help you with the spokes. oil, orings and filter should get it done, maybe spend the $25 on the belt tension tool if you feel the need.

a lift would be required to adjust the fall away - but unless you have a loose front end or a clunk - not sure it's worth the bother.

use the H-d primary/tranny oil in the primary... ams oil for the other 2 holes.
belt tension.. grip in index and 1st finger and twist. 45ş and you are good to go.

a good set of torques heads, and allen heads... will really help on your ride... you can change on the ground i use a 5 gallon paint tray and slide that under... or i use the lift... either way, if you do not lift slide a 2x4 under the kick stand so it levels it out... be sure you warm up the bike first

i use Lucas 20W50 in the primary and oil (in the oil i add 20 oz of oil treatment)
in the trans i run Mobile 1 75/90 gear oil...
personally I do not mind HD fuids i just think there are better out htere... i have used them though

Be careful removing the derby cover screws...they strip easily. There are threads on this forum to help you if you do strip them. Other than that it is very easy! Also get the special throttle cable lube for cables from HD stealer. And an oil filter removal tool!

Have fun, it is really easy.

The derby cover uses a T27. Keep in mind that a T25 can strip the head fairly easily.

before you try to take out any torques head screws put a punch in the center of the screw and give it a SMACK! this will help to break the loc tite and stretch the threads so you never strip them... works! promise

I'm getting ready to do my 1000 mile service also. I'm going with synthetic oil. Is there any problem with doing a wet change and going to synthetic, and having the amount of regular oil left in there after the draining in with the syn? Or do I need to do something extra to get that 1/2qt out of there?

HD synth is actually a blend of reg and synthetic, mixing synthetic and reg. oil ,damage to the gaskets is a myth, I wouldn't go mixing up the stuff on purpose , but if you stick to synthetic, and I think you will, afyter the next change there will be almost no trace of reg. oil left!

X2 on the filter wrench. However I use a standard automotive slip/expansion type wrench you can get a your local auto parts store. Works like a champ.

Also make some type of 'thing' from either cardboard or water bottle or liter bottle, to catch the oil when you remove your filter. Otherwise it dribbles down the Dyna's chin. I made mine from a plastic water bottle, works great.

Oh yeah, let me pass along these clips which was posted a couple weeks ago. Nothing like 'seeing' it along with reading it
