Default How to remove the cap on the top of the triple-tree?

Hey

My front end was loose as h*ll. The good folks at Shelton's HD in Durham took care of me under the 1215 bulletin, but I'm thinking I better start doing this me-self.

There is a tool described in the Harley Dyna 2007 Service Manual as: HD-41494 "Hubcap remover and installer". It's used to get the end cap off the top of the triple tree when adjusting the front end fallaway and bearing tension. Problem is, even Zanotti's wants $70+ for this thing. I've seen a picture of it and it looks like a small rubber-band wrench.

I'm wondering what everyone else is using to get that thing off?

i heat mine a bit with a blow dryer and then use my hands... no idea if the blow dryer helps but i think it does... the dollar store and harbor freight both have a small ruberband wrench

Default Cap is screwed.

On my '06, the cap is screwed on. I am not the strongest ***** around and I could unscrew it?! It's just a cosmetic cover. It covers the nut and locing washer for the steering stem. The tool is mearly a strap wrench but if need be, you could wrap a towel around it and use vise grips! Be creative! (I know a guy that pryed his off only to see the screw!? A replacement cap is about $24 from HD so it would be cheaper than a tool!)

Another bit of info is that there is a Safety Bulletin for a washer that is needed to correctly adjust the fallaway. (Thread on Forum) Instead of giving my money to the HD guys (since they p'ed me off), I bought the $2 wash online and did it myself. Also note that you need to loosen and raise the top triple clamp to make these correct adjustments. (don't try to squeeze in there!)

Good luck and hope this helps!

HELDVR:

Yea, that bulletin 1215 was what got my front end adjusted for free :-)

I do everything else on that bike, figured I better learn how to take care of that part too!

All I do is take the rubber band that's wrapped around celery from the grocery store and put around the cap and start turning. The rubber band is just wide enough to extend beyond the top of the cap so that you can actually grip it enough to unscrew it. It has worked for me every time (so far).

Mine simply unscrewed. Amazing some of the tools they try to sell!

Take a thumb and three fingers from each hand. lace the fingertips together around the cap. Grip tightly and twist.
Works every time.
replace using fingers from one hand.
