I've looked pretty hard between the primary and trans/engine ... nothing there. That's why I thought maybe they fell back behind, between the fender/vertical frame members/trans mount ... wedged in there somehow.

Thanks for the tips, when I get back I'll try using a magnet.

Sucks 'cause I dropped the nut that goes on the rear tank mounting bolt ... the long chrome plated one.

I also have a small hooked piece of magnetic steel that comes in handy for poking around where the magnet does not work. I also have a plastic one if I think scratches are an issue.

I have had this happen several times and have never found the nuts. I always keep spares around when changing exhaust nuts. I tried my magnetic telescoping thing and found nothing. Nuts never to be found again have all supposedly moved here to CA.

If you have an air compressor, take the air hose and blow in all the suspected hiding places and you might get lucky and blow them out.

like so many other this to has happened. a couple of places i have found was once i had lost mine i looked everywhere for it decided to rotate the rear tire just to see if anything happened, sure enough rotated the tire and the tap clanked to the ground i guess it was sitting on the belt or gear behind the primaries .so thats worth a shot,i didnt want to take a chance on it finding away back to my rear spocket and belt. another place i have notice thing going is the rear swing arm.where it pivots off the engine. its kinda a wedge just check those. with a good magnet.
