Question Swapping Tanks (Street Bob)

How difficult is it to swap out the tank for another one? I would have to drain the gas etc... I'm a little concerned with the gas gauge and fuel unit.

Here is a great write-up done by mascman.

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/dyna-glide-models/292767-how-to-assemble-disassemble-fuel-tank-guts.html

I recently had my tank off and did not find the actual removal and re-installation difficult at all.

An extra set of hands is helpful.

Take a spare piece of fuel hose and plug one end of it with a bolt or something similar. Have another similar size object you can use to plug the fuel crossover hose. Remove the crossover from one side of the tank and quickly slide on the plugged spare piece of hose. Have your spare hands plugging the end of crossover hose you removed. Remove the plug from crossover to drain fuel into container.

Remove the supply line at the quick connect on the tank.

Push up on the outer ring and gently pull the supply line coupler straight down.

Place something like a 2" x 4" under the tank to prevent it from falling on and scratching the rocker boxes.

Unbolt the tank, front and rear and lift off.

Follow mascman's thread.

Put your cigarette out before you start. I could have filled a tanker with what I spilled.

I agree. Drainin the tank was the worst part.
Make sure u pull the fuse on the fuel pump then run the bike till it stalls to relieve the pressure goin 2 the injectors.
pretty easy though.

If your tank is below full, it's easy to drain after you pull the top cover off.

I placed mine on the lift, removed the dash and cover and used a hand siphon pump. Go to the hardwrae store and get the siphon for kerosene for just a couple dollars.

I was able to siphon almost all of it out.

For the very little that was left, I put an old towel in to soak it up.

The only gas I spilled was what was in the crossover line.

Anyone ever tried draining the tank by using the fuel pump?
If one had an extra quick connect fitting and a section of hose - couldn't you just disconnect the fuel line and connect the spare piece - run the fuel pump and it drains the tank for you?

Sounds like more hassle than it's worth.

I've told you an easy way to do it...worked twice for me so far.
