I was riding today and noticed my battery light came on. This was after a fast take off.
On the way home while running I shut the key off and turned it back on an popped the cluth to start the bike. I taught this might shut the battery light off? Any ways I noticed some periodic loud noises from the engine like clang and bang. Then it went away but the battery light stayed on. When I got home I shut down the bike for 10 minutes and resarted the bike and the battey light was off. I took it for a short ride and got on it a little and the noise reappeared and the battery light came back on. When I got home I shutdown the bike and it wouldn't start the battery was almost dead.
Unfortunately, I agree & 99% sure that's what it is! Alot of us have been through it. If you take it in to get fixed don't let them put a new 06 rotor and stator in, have them put the 07 rotor and stator in (it's welded and won't come apart). Or if you do it yourself you can save money by ordering the set up from chicago harley.
If I have Harley do it how much. Christmas is around the corner I may have to wait.
Would the engine make lots of noise only when it's reved but sound and run ok at low speeds Also the battery light is off now.
I didn't experience the destruction part, I just figured I'd do the conversion before it happened, and sure as sh** 2 of the little bolts came out, and another was loose ( got lucky )! I've got the part number out in my shop, if it's not posted by this evening I'll post it. I think the total was about 240
Oh, and obviously try to get harley to pay for it. From what I hear, a couple of shops have, but most don't. Mine acted like they never heard of it, which is BS cause I now of at least 4 guys in town that it happened to and they all reported it to our dealer!
Thanks guys I feel lots better now knowing that is may only be the stator. I'll try to get my HD dealer to pay. If not I may buy a HD manual and tackle it myself. I need to learn how to do the small jobs myself and leave the big ones to HD mech. Can I drive the bke to the dealer like this if needed?
