My other bike is a ZX12R W/NOS so I don't get the I'm faster BS about my Harley from people that know me. I got my HD for cruising not racing but it is getting cams, crank work and a few more cubes.
Sounds like he found a way to get under your skin, and is having fun with it.
There are a few ways to stop it though, but at least one of them would probably get you fired if not thrown in jail.
The best way is to just admit to him that you already know how much faster his bike is than yours. And then do your best to just ignore him. Once he figures out it's not bothering you anymore he'll more than likely stop.
I recommend dropping about 2/3 of your budget into getting around 100hp/100ft-lb and spend the rest on the cool factor ... you've already got him beat on that front just by owning a Dyna ... in SPADES!!
If the guy is proud of his bike being faster, or having more power then good for him. Harleys weren't geared or built to be a race machine in anyway. The closest that Harley got was with the VR1000 that never went through to production, instead the motor was put into the VRod.
The Twin Cam motor in the Dyna will make some good power, but building one that is naturally aspirated won't gain you anything unless you spend upwards of $8000+. The other thing you have to consider is the injectors. Screamin Eagle offers a set of High Flow injectors that flow 25% more than stock, but they are still only about 34-35lbs/hr. The majority of fuel control systems will run the injector at an 80% duty cycle and with these numbers the SE High Flow injectors will only feed a 110-115 hp motor adequately. If you go big, don't skip any part of the fuel system or you won't ever see the bigger numbers the motor can really make. For the current turbo market you can get a Trask kit for $5000, build the motor good for around another $3000-$5000 and really have an intimidating machine making above 150Hp, if not more depending on the bore you go up to.
You would be better off showing up on a Vrod that hasn't had a lot of money thrown at rather thn showing up on a Dyna that had another $10K tossed into it just to compete with a less expensive, more powerful stock bike
A stock VMAX is priced at $18k for the 2009's. I don't know what his is. My bike was listed at $12.5k I was really only interested in discovering what's possible... knowing that my bike has the cool factor and classic lines while his is fugly.

This is what I should do. True.

100/100 would be perfect and there are so many bolt-ons I want. Good advice!
Capt...don't blow a bunch of money just to shut someone up. Deal with him in a much more intelligent manner. Not saying you should do to your bike what YOU want but don't do it based on someone else's opinion.
You could always say "Have you ever gotten laid because you ride a {bike brand}?" Most women I've come in contact with over the years know one thing...H-D. That included northern and southern women alike.
Play the head game with him, and enjoy your bike.
Challenge him to a drag race and when he takes off, get off your bike and go make-out with his chick. LMAO!

LOL...well said. Remember, it's not just throwing $$$ for the motor, the bike has to be well balanced to handle the added hp/tq...suspension, clutch, transmission, brakes, strengthening the frame, etc.

I paid roughly $13K for my Dyna when I bought it. I could have dropped $18K for a Vrod if I wanted to but I wasn't after a speed machine, I wanted a cruiser. The Vmax has a history of being a mean little machine. For the power of the new Vmax and the options they have compared to years gone by, I am sure it is worth $18K to some people. The Vrod was looked at the same way when it first came out. New lines, entirely new motor that promised big power, after it caught on people raved about how good the Vrod was. The reason is because from the ground up the Vrod was a race bred motor. The Twin Cam and Evo motors simply weren't built for big Hp numbers, mostly just for the torque.
The Vmax, and even a number of other cruisers out there would easily stomp on a Harley because they make higher HP. You may take them off the line, but once the RPMs are winding up they take off and there is little to no top-end power on the Harley twin cam to keep up with the competition.
Anything is possible when you have the money, but in this situation the reason seems wrong just to shut a guy up. The other thing to consider is if you spend all the money and still can't beat him it makes you look even worse.
Hell, if it makes you feel better I have been wiped clean with a buddy's 1990 or so Nighthawk 750. Its embarassing, but you have to have some respect for the machine and know what its capable of doing.
There's a guy in the EFI subforum that has 121hp on his modified TC.
I don't think you can get much more from an HD engine.
Take in account you are comparing and air cooled engine (TC) with liquid cooling (VM09), 4 light pistons for 4 450cc cilinders (VM09) vs 2 heavy pistons for 2 800cc cilinders...
You should touch the plastichrome of his vmax and compare it with the real one of your harley, if you want to compare those 2 bikes. Or you can ask him about maintenance of the engine, durability... a TC is designed to last almost forever if properly mantained. I don't think that a Vmax engine lasts much long. I don't see many VMax from the 90s here in Barcelona, but I see a lot of HD's.
