For what it's worth, it's really not hard at all to do the full install of the HD forwards. I had to do the reverse to take them off the used 07 Street Bob I purchased when I sold my Nightster (I'm short and needed to go back to the mid-mount controls on the Bob). Anyway, I had previously done some simple bolt-ons to the 1200 -- and admittedly a lot of wrenching on cars, but it really is no biggie as long as you can use simple tools. The only weird "tool" you need to do it right is a piece of flat bar stock cut to length to wedge into the gears so you can get both big nuts off inside the outer primary. Oh yeah, make sure you have a long zip-tie for the tensioner. . . .
I got it done today.. just left the mid shift shaft in there for now. I may take the primary off after all to do the full install because the new shift rod without the new shift lever on the tranny seems to leave the front shift lever in a position that will make it hard to get the oil filter out to do oil change. Also, my first impression is that forward control are lot nicer on my 01 FXDWG then these new rigs.
I rode with mid shaft inplace , until they had to pull the primary and replace the inner primary bearing, but i chose to leave the shorter throw on the tranny linkage arm..
just came across this old thread while searching..
I installed the 06+ HD forwards & did not replace the rear trans lever.
I am also having trouble finding neutral. I think maybe the new front shift lever
must be longer than the old kit.
could someone who has installed the older HD kit measure the length of the front
shift lever (center of spline shaft to hole where shift linkage attaches)??
might be able to order the older lever and increase the throw making it easier to find neutral.
if not, I guess I could drill another hole in my lever.
thanks in advance..
Jeesh all this talk about neutral problems after installing the 06 & later kit makes me wonder if I should get the 05 & earlier kit for my bob. Is anyone else having all these probems after installong the 06 & later forwards on an 06 & up dyna without pulling the primary? Or is a solution just buying a shorter shifter rod or a shorter shifter peg arm?
I left the mid shaft in place so I didn't have to pull the primary case. I bought the '06 and later kit, as well. I plan to cut the shaft out, but I'm a freakin slacker. I might cut it out before the end of summer!
I haven't had any problems finding neutral. It was easier with the mid controls, but still not a problem. Also, I did not install the new rear shift lever that came with the kit. I just left the original one on. Really didn't feel like goin thru all that trouble for something that appeared to be the exact same length that you can barely see anyway.

Looks like it is six inches center to center on the 05 and earlier kit, what does the 06 and later front shift lever measure out to?
thanks for the measurement WS6.
my lever measures 6 1/4" c/c on my 06+ kit--not much difference.
I did some autocad layouts and it looks the lever would need to be about an inch shorter
(5 1/4" or so) to have the same angle of throw as the stock mid shifter set-up.
Yosseppi:
I actually am kinda getting used to it, but it still bugs me a little bit. would be nice to have just a little more throw.
anybody have the kury set-up??
how about a measurement from someone with the kury front lever??
I guess I could always drill another hole 1" below the existing one to shorten the lever.

Another thing to look at is the relationship between the front lever and rear lever, are they parallel to each other? For an example; if your front lever is vertical and your rear lever was at an angle that would alter your leverage / throw.
