Finally gave in and bought a quick release windshield for my Super Glide today. It may not look as "cool" but OMG, what a difference in riding pleasure!!! Cold weather is no longer an issue, and it saves my back muscles big time! Can't wait til tomorrow so I can just ride til the tank runs dry! Plus I can take it off for the summer. I'm one happy camper!!! One of the best purchases ever made!
I enjoy my detachable ws. Knew I wanted one when I bought the bike. I know what long trips are with and without one. Nice part about it is, I can take if off in about 10 seconds if I choose to ride without. I rode today for about an hour and a half.. in 40 deg, no electrically heated anything.
It makes the ride that more enjoyable. I saw many out yesterday morning with no protection and just had to shake my head. They were freezing. It was high 30's on a toy run good cause and I enjoyed the ride. The cool factor of no shield has long passed.
My ride came with a dedatch, I took it off after the first week and have not put it back on. With the shield on, the FL front end looks to much like a cop bike when I'm behind someone, I even had cage pull over one day and let me pass. It is nicer to drive with it on, but I have gotten used to the wind in my face along with the odd bug. When I do some long hauls this summer I will most likely put it back on for the trip. I do think the detaches are the way to go, can't ride with it half the time, can't ride without it the other half.
good move for the cold weather... I have one that fit my narrowglide. have not gotten another for the wideglide front.
When I did my wide conversion, I was able to make the old windshield work by reversing the brackets. If you have the style that has the brackets that stay on the forks with the shield off, you can swap the left and right brackets that are attached to the lexan to give you the additional need width. It is tight but will work. Makes the windsheild harder to remove tho, but if you never take it off its no problem.
I bought my guick release when I bought the bike. I've riden with it off a couple of times and the noise from the wind is just to loud for me. I don't have quiet mufflers and the wind noise is so loud that there are times when I can't hear them. Also, when I see all of the bugs on the windshield after a ride and knowing they would have been on me, the windshield pretty much stays on all of the time.
