Default any advise for chopping rear fender

I plan on chopping my rear fender on my street bob just above the tailight and just below the fender struts, has anyone done this in their garage and are their any recommendations for tools to use and pracautions to not scratch any paint on the fender. also how to paint the rim after the cut.

There's several threads here regarding the cut...but not many regarding paint. Since you've got black denim, you can do it with a rattlecan...with vivid paint like me, I wouldn't know what to tell you. The paint issue is one reason I haven't chopped mine yet.

First mark the area with masking tape(3 OR 4 layers)Then mark the tape with a pencil where to cut.I use a cutoff wheel, the tape will help the wheel from skipping around.Go slow you may have to cut it a little big in some spots and later file or grind it smooth. All bare metal must be primed befor paint. Sounds EZ

It really does sound easy, have you seen anyone do it? Never would have thought about layering the masking tape.

I've done it.Be sure to take the fender off the bike! It's EZ to lay it out with tape first cuz if you don't like it you can change the tape.Once you cut it you like it or you get another fender!

You may allready know this, but use the thinest cut off wheel you can get. .030" thick is good. It will cut better and generate less heat. Don't force it, let the wheel do the job.

I used a jig saw with e thin metalblade, very clean cut and easy to work with.

I like to use a cut-off wheel.

I did this one when my fender cracked...had to trim material under the strut which I wouldn't have done if it wasn't cracked. Figured I mignt as well bob it too.

I used the top edge of the hole for the light as the guide.

Sold to a member on here who was going to paint it and install it and never did hear from him.

I used a fine metal blade just like bosken. Finish it off with a file or sanding disk. You could then touch it up with a small paint brush. Use plent of masking tape.

black denim spray can is available from H-D. prime first. you should only need to paint the lip of the cut when done.
