my open filter is a K&N... lifetime filter sound good to me.
I have a rain sock as well made for my RSD intake... generic round ones(to fit what you are doing) are out there and are cheap...
The K&N HD 0800 is the filter the used to come with the SE kit, it will fit just fine and you can get it thru auto zone or perhaps thru advance auto parts, special order. Also get the recharge kit (cleaner and oil). I believe the HD filter is pleated paper and the K&N is pleated cotton fabric.

Where did you get the rain sock for the RSD venturi a/c?
This has been discussed before and while redundant subject seem to eat away at some, it doesn't bother me.
As Joe said, if you have a stock a/c, that backing plate is going to look nasty if you run it open. You'll also be letting it breath a lot more air and it mike affect how it runs.
Let's assume, based on what I've read here that you have the SE stage 1 a/c and filter. You can run it open. If you'd prefer a K&N filter, you can run that open too. I typically don't ride in the rain on purpose so having an open filter doesn't bother me. But I had to go to a conference a couple of hours away last year and the forecast was for a 30 percent chance of scattered showers. I took the chance and rode the bike. It started raining on me half way there and all the way back. It didn't hurt the filter or the bike and I didn't notice it running any differently.
I ran an open KN for a couple years and never had a problem until I was on my way back from vaca and hit rain for a hundred miles. If you are going to run it open, keep it clean and oiled. I have two now so I don't have to wait for one to dry out after I wash it.
