Please take a look at the attached pics. I was looking under the bike trying to see how the foot peg mounts come off so I could have them powder coated and noticed the front motor mount (isolator) appears torn. I'm very new to riding so I can't really comment on excessive vibration but I have noticed what feels like rattling in the foot pegs after I had new pipes and a big sucker kit put on. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

The front mount looks as though it is oil saturated from oil changes, you want to avoid motor oil from getting on the rubber mount. The bottom picture (left) shows a large air gap which is a problem, (the rough edges are not actually a tear but are from the mold in maunufacture and not a problem). The top picture (right) shows NO air gap, and again this is a problem. The front mount is collapsed and needs to be replaced. These mounts sustain wear and tear from the weight of the engine pushing down on them all the time, even while parked in the garage, and eventually the small air gap on the top of the mount diminishes to the point to where the rubber contacts the mount bracket transmitting vibration through the chassis.
I should have added that the bike is a 2004 fxdx with under 7000 miles. I am the second owner and had one oil change done at an indy about a 1000 miles ago when i bought it. There seems to be lots of posts about these mounts. Is there any consensus as to how long the replacement mount will last? Should I go ahead and replace the rear at the same time or only if it is bad too? Thanks

Motor oil will soften the rubber, so keeping oil off the mount will help it last longer. The engines weight has still been supported by the rubber mount for, what four or five years now depending on the build date. Inspect the rear mount and make sure the bolts are tight too. I would start with a new front mount. The rear mount does not oscillate as much as the front mount does.
