70MPH? Isn't that getting close to being able to force you to lose control? I'm think if you're doing 60MPH and a 70MPH gust of wind hits you....that's equivalent to 130 MPH...hurricane force...enough to damage homes and blow cars around. yeah I think I'd sit that sort of wind out too
I went out for a short ride last summer the day Hurricane Ike winds made it's way through the midwest. It wasn't bad when I left but after a half an hour I seriously beginning to wonder if I were going to make it home. It was almost like I was leaning into a turn the whole ride, and a few strong gusts would push me dangerously to the side. I made it home before the bad winds hit and I'm glad I did. I went back the same route the next day and it had laid whole fields of corn over. I'll be much wiser next time.
I have been in NM and in KS and the wind in both places is pretty steep. I was riding one time in KS and the wind was so gusting so hard it actually pushed me into the next lane. Luckily it was a turn lane and no one was in it, had to move to the right hand lane and made sure no one was on my inside. Yeah it is kind of hard without a windshield, but just held on and got to a place where it was a bit better shielded and not so bad.
Besides my snide remark ... the wind, especially if it's hitting you sidways can be a problem. I remember picking up my new Triumph Sports Touring bike several years ago very early in the spring and the winds were out of control ... and so was I. It was so bad my 1st ride that I thought there was a problem with the bike, but it was the wind hitting me on the side. The bike was actually a great handling machine.
I just did a ride along the scenic California coast...dealt with harsh crosswind from the ocean and drifting sand on the road. Talk about feeling alive! I swear there was a stretch where I was leaning towards the ocean the whole time and I was actually leaning in the opposite direction of a curve.
I wonder how much help True-Track would have been in this situation.
