Who is running synthetics? Is it worth the extra cash? I'm gonna be due for my 1000 mile checkup, the dealer gave me a free 1000 mile checkup unless I go to synthetics should be around $30.00 What are pro's and if any con's?
It's all personal preference. My bike goes in tomorrow for the 5K service. I went synthetic at the 1K service, and will use it again tomorrow. Just stick to the recommended service intervals and use a quality, name-brand oil. The bike will be fine.
Synthetics? Yes. A friend burned a hole in one of the pistons in a Toyota Supra w/Turbo at appx. 95mph--blowing all the oil out of the motor before he could get stopped. Only had to replace the piston and rings in that cylinder. He was running Amsoil. Since synthetic oils don't break down the same as conventional oil some reports say just change the filter every 3000 mi. and top of for the oil you lost - and you can go 15k or more before a complete oil change. In my 4 runner I do that and change the oil when it's color is way different than "honey" it started off looking. On my Harley's, I change oil every 5k . I obviously value the Harleys way over the p.o.s. 4-runner.
1000x's YES, i run lucas 20W50 all around (trans gets readline severe gear) in the motor i also add lucas oil additive 20oz... SMOOOTH AS GLASS and does nt sound like a sewing machine! haha ha ha either that or Mobile 1 is a HUGE favorite of mine, all my metrics get that as well, just runs super cool
I switched to synth on my second oil change. I said that I couldn't notice any difference except that my neutral light starting working properly again. But, last fall the dealer changed my inner primary bearing and put the Harley oil in the primary. Now going backwards I can see the difference. That first time into gear clunk is much louder. I'll be putting the Redline back in the primary as soon as spring gets here.
