Default Confused with the fork lock

This is probably stupid, but I can't work the fork lock lon my new 07 FXDB. I read the manual, but it says "press in key and turn clockwise". So I turn the key all the way counter-clockwise to turn off the bike, press in and turn clockwise?

I tried that, it will go all the way clockwise, but then I can't remove the key -- plus the fork is not locked. I just want to make sure it's working properly, and that it's me and mot broken.

I am used to a separate fork lock on the old Sporty, so this is different.

thanks.

There are ALOT of folks that have problems with the front fork lock.I have a 2008 superglide that has been an excellent performer and a great bike, EXCEPT for the finicky fork lock. I rarely ever lock my front forks, but when ever i do its a crap shoot. I gotta sorta jiggle the handle bars back and forth slightly to get it to lock...Last time i tried to lock it i could not get it to lock, got pissed off at it and just left it parked unlocked at the mall. [ got full coverage] Although if someone wants to steal it, the fork lock ain't gonna stop em for even a second.

I watched a video of some crooks stealing a harley, they pulled up in a van and slid the side door open, pushed out a bed mattress with 2 handles on each side of it, and then the 4 crooks just kicked the bike over on the mattress and lifted it up and slid it up into the van and they drove off. This whole episode took all of 15 seconds....

Wiggle the handlebars as you turn the key, mine was the same way.

Try turning it counter clockwise. Like you're turning the bike off, but keep going. Sometimes you need to move the bars slightly one way or the other so that the hole on the lower tree lines up with the pin that locks it in place.

Press in key and turn clockwise to start and run the bike. Turn counterclockwise to shut down and turn counterclockwise all the way to lock the fork. You may have to move the bar back and forth while turning counterclockwise with the key to get it to lock.

That's what I thought, thanks. Guess the manual is wrong. Wouldn't be the first time!

When you turn it all the way counter-clockwise you are pushing a bar/pin down from the neck into a small hole in the fork's lower tree. Try it with the bars all the way to the left, then if it doesn't go in, move them a little to the right as you apply tension to the key. If it still doesn't go in, then your bar/pin is probably bent and not lining up with the hole in the tree. You may be able to see where it is hitting the tree if you swing the bars all the way to the right and look for the hole. Mine works, but it feels like a delicate setup. I am sure if you cranked it when locked you could break it free, so I don't have a lot of faith in it as a deterrent. Good luck.

+1 all of the above. Mine has been difficult from day one. Turn the wheel all the way left, it if does not lock jiggle it a little while turning the key. I had a Indy squirt some lock lubricant in and it make it 100% better. Not a good design.

Lube the mechanism with some cable lube or WD40. My key doesn't "push in" it just turns.
