Just so I understand all that I've read (through searching), I need to wedge something in the brake lever, so the brake light switch doesn't get damaged, before I remove the clamp screws, right?
I wedged in a piece of cardboard when I swapped bars. Figured it may not be necessary, but it was a 2 second precaution against having to replace the switch so I figured 'what the heck' and did it. I don't know if it saved me from bustin' the switch or not.
Are you swapping out bars or doing something else? Good luck, whatever it is!
+4 here...never had the issue of breaking the switch.
Must have taken my controls off 7 or 8 times at least.
Not like it hurts to be on the cautionary side though.
it's not really the switch you are protecting from damage as much as the rubber gasket/seal/prophylactic around the switch.... for those that haven't heard of this procedure, you prolly haven't read the SM, or at least read it closely (not slamming you, just pointing out, it is in the SM).
I've had mine off twice. First time I put the wedge in there, it fell out at some point in the process, everything wen back together fine. Second time I figure what the hell, and just took apart... There is something in there that can catch on the little prophylactic, and sure enough I ripped it. This does NOT necessarily affect the operation of the brake switch, but the next time you ride in the rain or wash your bike, you could end up damaging the switch.
