Hello....I am new to this forum, and hoping someone might help.
I have an '03 Super Glide with approx 50K miles. Has been running great, and then yesterday morning, I started hearing a Whining Noise that lasted about 6 miles until the bike died. It will not start back up, and I have it sitting on a trailer until I determine what I need to do. Am I in for a complete overhaul or maybe it is something simple....at least I am hoping.
I am not mechanical, but I was hoping that it was the vacuum line that came loose, but it seems to be just fine. Any ideas?

You need to provide a lot more details as to what happened in order to get reliable advice here.
How much good would it do me to e-mail my cardiologist and ask him to diagnose pains I was having in the area below by neck the Tuesday before last?
1) Whining Noise started and sounded like it was coming from under the Front of the Tank. (Had the sound of a sport bike blending in with the pipes)
2) When I started excelerating from a Traffic Light, I went to shift from 1st to 2nd and it kind of spit and sputtered once, then died quick.
3) It will turn over, but never catches and starts.
4) When I try to start it, I can smell gas.
Any nasty mechanical clunking before it died or just the sputter?
Sounds like the stator might be toast. Maybe took out the ignition with it?
Got gas .. next check for spark .....
Maybe put it on a lift - strap it down - kick it into 5th gear and manually spin the rear wheel - see if you get any nasty sounds from valve train???
If the stator or rotor fail, the charging system would quit working. Yes, it could make a whining noise. The bike would continue to run until the battery dies. If it will still turn over and the battery seems fully charged, I don't think it is the stator/rotor. When they go bad the bike is running, but the battery is not being charged. The battery goes dead and the bike quits. Low voltage to the ignition module can make it spit and sputter just before it dies. Usually the speedo stops working before the engine quits. After it quits the battery is so dead that the bike will not turn over. Sounds like it's something else.
I had the same sounds coming from mine. It was fine and I was out riding, went into a bar, came out and started up and then came the "wine" "zipping" sound that you are talking about. It sounded like a box of rocks in my primary after that. Below is the warranty work that they did.
