To clarify you just closed the 1/2 moon opening? So all the air flows through the baffle, none over the baffle? Or do I have it backwards? None of the air flows through the baffle?
I had the diverter tang closed off so that no exhaust flows straight through. It all is diverted and comes through the opening indicated by the arrows and then reenters the baffle tube through the smaller holes downstream.
Don't use regular steel wool. It has to be STAINLESS steel wool. There is a vendor on ebay that sells it. It's quite a bit more expensive than regular steel wool, but it won't rust to pieces in the muffler.

Understood, Thank you! Can you describe the difference in sound? Is it strictly a decibel issue?

Yes, it's strictly a dB issue. Any baffle that allows some exhaust to go straight through is going to be louder when you really get into the throttle than a baffle that forces all the exhaust to expand into the muffler can and then reenter the baffle tube to exit.
With the tang shut off these mufflers are still plenty loud and sound pretty much the same as they did before, just not as loud during hard acceleration.
Little late here but I read the comments about blocking straight thru exhaust with ss wool and went to dollar general and purchased a 2 pad pack of ss scouring pads which are courser that most. Removed my baffles and laced ss wire on each side of the pad to hold the pad in center of my baffles. Its raining so I only got to hear in shop but I really like the sound. My problem was I have SE II's and they were too loud. When I rode I put cotton in my ears to help. My question is even though I drilled 8 - 1/4" holes in each end of the baffles have I caused too much back pressure? There is about 2 1/2" of baffles holes on each side of the ss pad. The only other thing done to the bike was a stage I kit installed when the SE II were installed. Do anyone see a problem with what I have done?
Gary - I'm not sure what your running now. The stock pipes with no packing or a slightly modified baffle?
Reading this thread made me think - I posted the question but not much reply so, I guess I'll bring it up here too.
I have a set of SE street performance from my sportster. I realy like the way they sounded - just a little louder than stock but with a different tone. I don't really want to mess with the stock baffle but I was wondering if I could do something (slightly mod.) the SE / SP baffles and if they would fit in the St. Bob pipes.
I really like the looks of the stock St.Bob pipes so at this point - I'd rather put a little effort into a reasonable mod. than an another set of slip ons.
I just put the Cycle Shack Baffles in my bob this week. I can't get enought of the sound. awesome deep rumble but not obnoxious. Had it sitting next to my bud's FXDC with Rush slip ons. Mine is just a tad louder, but much deeper sounding. I used the reducers from advanced auto and tacked them on to the header end of the baffles so I know they won't end up rattling. Fit like a glove into my cans. I already had the packing out and didn't put it back in. Thanks to all who have posted on this mod. Saved me a lot of money and I have exactly the sound I was after. pure harley rumble with these baffles. Thanks again Gary7 for figuring this out and sharing your brilliance!!
Just an update on the mod. Been running it for a while now with no problems. Got the thundermax installed and it's even better. I haven't had any issue with the packing blowing out. I didn't mess with it any when I pulled out the old baffles. Just slid the new baffles right back into the packing and slid the whole setup into the pipes. The sound is great! I had a buddy bugging me to buy v&h pipes till he went on a road trip with me. Now he's trying to figure out a way to mod his bike!

Ive, been enjoying mine too. are the thundermax different than the Drag Specialties referred to in post #1?
