I have heard this noise as well, I have determined my noise to be detonation. It happens to me with warmed up engine on a cooler day here in LA, and the warmer it gets the less I notice it.
I belive that im goosing the throttle too much in a high gear. i usually hear it in 4th when Im crusing at 30 to 40 mph and I think that the gear range is too low for the amount of throttle im giving it.
I am experimenting with it now. basicly just a small jetting change and gear changes to a lower range before i gun it.
my Indy tells me its a charataristic of the TC as he put it "they twinkle"

In repeating what KY Windage said... it's unfortunate that a bunch of us are experiencing this noise and not knowing what it is, but, it is reassuring that at least it's not just my bike and others know what I'm talking about. One would think that with this noise being rather common, Harley would know how to remedy it.
I get this noise if I get on it hard from a dead stop, or if I punch it when in lower rpm range in other gears. Somebody said it sounds like the noise the exhaust system makes when it is cooling off after shut down. That's exactly how mine sounds. Thought it was my guardian bell, but no dice. Will check horn bracket. So far have not found any loose items.
Checked the horn bracket, exhaust clamps/bracket, and anything else that could be the culprit. Everything tight and not apparent contacting/rubbing. Waiting on a call-back from a Tech at the dealership.
Yeah... I heard the same sound Saturday and Sunday while out riding. The bike warmed up a little more than it has before (temps got around 70 degrees outside and I had been riding a while). I'd hear it in 4th and 5th gear whenever I accelerated HARD like cracking the throttle open 100%. Not lugging the engine at all, but in the top half of the powerband. I checked my heat shields on my pipes when I got home because it sounded like the noise the pipes make when they're cooling. I'm also glad to hear it's not just me. I run 87 octane and was going to try a tank of 93 to see if it made a difference in case it was detonation but I really didn't think it was. No loss of power when I hear the sound and I've never heard detonation/pinging before that sounds quite like this does. It's a sort of uh... "Twinging" kind of sound. I think I'll still try one tank of 93 just for the heck of it since it will only cost about $1 more than a tank of 87 to try.
I'm surprised at these responses, I posted a thread on this over a year ago & got nothing! Not to happy about it, cuase I've torn it down so many times including my cases when I had my crank reworked & found nothing out of the norm, pisses me off cause I allways figure things out but not this. On the other hand I'm glad I'm not the only one.
Somebody mentioned somethin about the compensator. When these come loose, it's more of a clunk - knock noise & you'll even hear it at idle. I ride the sh** out of my bike & it hasn't gotten any worse so screw it!
Chad I'm noticing your compression which is the same as mine and wonder if you've tried any type octane booster. Mine has the same noise under acceleration in higher gears. It doesn't do it under hard acceleration or if I downshift before getting on it in higher gears.
Same here, I get a tink noise when accelerating. I put IEDs on and it is still there. I really don't think it is detonation, but trying to pin point it while riding is freakin' impossible. I think the only way to pin point it would be on a dyno and that could add up $$. Mine is still together so, like Chad says, screw it!
I will say this, I adjusted my belt when I replaced my tire and I could swear it went away, then like a fool I took it to the dealer to do the 5K (yes, I am Lazy) and the noise came back. I had adjusted it to the tight side of spec, but I adjust it with me on the bike, normal riding position. Not sure how the tech at the dealer does it, actually seems to be a little too tight to me. So, I guess I am going to adjust it my way and see if it does go away.
I also posted about this quite some time ago.

Interesting Cbz1200n you mention your belt.
This evening, I've been thinking about this issue, and I was also thinking about the belt.
Sometimes when various materials are under stress, they can make noises that you wouldn't think. Oh well.
