Hi everyone, I'vee been lurking for ages and finally thought I would get involved a little more.
Right now I have 12.5 inch rear shocks that are shot. I have been thinking about going to 11.5 but progressive doesn't make them in the 412/418 models. They make 11s though.
Is anyone running 11s? Any fender rubbing? how about the scrapping on corners? I weigh 200 and I rarely carry a rider. Thanks
Here's my take on rear shocks, the more travel the better. On a Dyna I'd stick to 12 1/2(stock) or 13" and then there's the big choice of which brand. Here's how I rate them.
1) stock: crap
2)Progressive 412 better barely 225.00Pr.
3)Progressive 440 noticeable improvement 480.00 Pr.
4)Works Performance single rate better than 440's tailored for your weight 469.00 Pr.
5)works Performance dual rate 649.00 pr. better still
Now we start getting to the ones that will keep you firmly planted, supple ride whole different ballgame.
6)YSS Z series self adjusting gas shock, preload, rebound adjust 399.00-589.00
7)YSS G series self adjusting shock with piggyback reservoir preload rebound and compression adjust 659.00-849.00 pr
8)Penske 1000.00+ per pair preload rebound some models compression adjust.
Feel free to argue how I rated them, pick the one that suits your budget. I feel that all of them are better than stock, some WAY better. I guess it all depends on your priorities,my first priority has always been suspension first, brakes second, motor work third and bling last.
Forgot to add the more expensive shocks are rebuildable and will last a lifetime, they should be rebuilt about every 30K, they are custom tailored for your weight and riding style, and are very adjustable, they won't ship in a day,so expect a 2 week wait. I'll wait for the experts to chime in. I'm just some guy who expects my Harley to handle well, sound good, and look good.

You did a great job catagorizing them! VERY GOOD JOB!!!!
funny you should ask riding an FXDX - I put FXDX shocks (I believe 2001) on my St. Bob: . Along with V-rod internals up front, I have a very good handling motorcycle. Scrape a set of pegs down to metal each run up or down the Skyline Dr and Blue Ridge pkway...
Be aware that the ride height on the FXDX is a little higher than other models, giving more ground clearance. If the front forks are also longer, then fitting short shocks may mess up handling. Seems a shame to fit shorter shocks on the sporty Dyna!
Hi
I still have the stock shocks have read a little and one thing that stood out was, when lowering shocks are used you change angles that have an effect on handeling. My 2cents,when I upgrade my rears will put on shocks that have the stock ride height . Did put in works front springs and have been pleased with the ride so far.
