Picked up 2006 Dyna FXDI Wife got me Forward Controls any one have detailed directions on installing them the right way ?? or how I can get by with out removeing the shifter shaft?
Right side - a breeze. Left side - very hard you have to remove damn near everything. If you are confident - go for it, if not get the dealer to do it.
If you have the Service manual and decent mechanical aptitude you should be fine.
I did mine it took me all of 4.5 hours and that was taking my own sweet time with everything.
You will need all the normal tools such as the torx, allens etc. Plus you will need a Primary drive locking tool.
The older models used a plastic wedge but they are a no-no on the new Dyna's. This is due to the primary not being doweled to the motor or tranny and you could move things while torqueing the bolts. I made mine from a piece of 1/4" stainless stock about 1.5 " wide and 7.5" long. There is a picture of it in the service manual.
You will need to remove the battery, battery box, Starter, Primary cover, Clutch and compensating sprocket.
One thing you will need that the kit does not come with are the 5 seal bolts. they are a throwaway according to the service manual. The part number is 786a, they run about 2.05 each. Also the clutch mainshaft nut is 30mm you will need a deep socket for it.
Another note test the tower gasket in the kit before you remove the old one from the inner primary, mine lost it's adhesive to the backing and would not stay on the tower.
And it will leak. You may be better off leaving that gasket alone.
I love mine and I am glad I took the shaft out. It looks much better to me nice nad clean.
How far are you going to go to change the forwards. Are you just removing the mid controls and installing the forwards. If so you don't have to remove the battery and other things. All I have done was removed the mids and where the shaft comes out of the primary I installed the button cover on the shaft. If you go with removing the shift shaft rod from the primary you are looking at a lot of work.
That's if you use the '05 kit which will work on the the '06, But the '06 kit does not have the shaft cover but a chrome plug for the shaft hole.
I have seen several bikes that had this done. It does not look bad just not as clean as removing the shaft entirely. Much easier though. Probably only about an hour to do that way.
