A V-8, headslapper moment...
I've loved H-Ds my whole life, and I'm fairly up on the history and so forth. I've wondered before where the Wide Glide rear fender that is a Harley classic look came from exactly but never really thought about it much. I knew the WWII vets that started bobbing bikes popularized it, but I never thought about where the actual shape comes from. Then just a few minutes ago, it hit me that if you rotated a Wide Glide fender 90 degrees toward the back/ground, it is basically is the shape of rear fenders from that era (like a Heritage). Since those guys were always cutting off stuff to save weight, it makes sense that they would cut off the front part of the fender and rotate it forward a quarter turn...and shazam, a bobbed fender.
