Just kind of an idea at this time, because i dont know if it is possible. Hopefully there's some experienced painters on the board that will see this. Im wanting to paint my upper heatshields high-gloss black,
(like Bosken) of course regular auto paint and or rattle can would not hold up from the heat. So my ? is can i sand and paint with high-temp flat and then maybe have it sprayed with auto paint high gloss black and it hold up? Or any other suggestions to make this happen? Thanks for any help.
IMO, the only thing that holds up to the repetitive heating and cooling cycle for the heat sheilds is powder coating them. After a while even the best rattle can job would have to be re-applied. Powder last a lot longer and looks better over the long haul. I did mine, I'm running SE slipons and looks great IMO. Cost was like 40 bucks and was done in 3-4 hours. If you find a powder coater who is doing high volume production, you can get it cheaper maybe.
bosken if i am not mistaken you used a flat black though... that will take more heat than the gloss will... if you do this use 1200* paint... nothing else, do not clear (it will flake and yellow give the black a weird color) you have to sand it really well with 400... soak the can in hot water for about 15 min, that will really help it to flow out when you shoot it, light coats about 5 or 6... to much and hte paint will hold to much heat and it will not work... using gloss is hard to do... i powdered mine when i did it, everyone told me it would not work... powdercoater told me to try it... so i blasted them down, taped them out... and shot away (i still have ceramic for my "just in case the powder did nto work") i got a bit of white flaking but then nothing.. they loook great! as long as you use a 1200* paint you will be money, soak that can! it really help!
