Default Question about changing primary fluid...

I posted this over in the oil forum, but I thought I might get a quicker answer here.

When you refill the primary through the clutch cover, does the bike have to be sitting upright or can it be on the jiffy stand?

I guess what I'm asking is, if you refill with it on the jiffy stand, will it start running out of the clutch cover hole before you get the entire quart in there?

I'm not sure what the dealer put in my tranny and primary last week when they did the 1000 mile service, but the shifting has been rougher and noisier. I changed out the transmission fluid today and I'm going to do the primary tomorrow.

Your owners manual should tell you your answer. It should be on the kickstand when you fill it.

Already looked. It doesn't say one way or the other. Neither does the service manual.

hmm...you are right. I just checked my owners manual and my service manual both and neither one say what to do. It must have been my Sportster manual that said that it should be on the stand, I don't remember. Anyway, I just did mine a couple of months ago and I filled it with the bike on the stand and it held almost a quart, maybe just a couple of ounces shy of that. The book does say it should hold a quart though.

Did it start running out? Is that why you couldn't put in a full quart?

yep, it started running out of the hole. You got me wondering now though if I should have held it upright and got the whole quart in there. I have put about 1500 miles on it since then with no problems though.

It doesn't say whether straight up, or on kickstand. However it does say it takes 32oz, which is a quart. (in my .08 service manual)

(in my .08 service manual) Which is about all you can get in there, without it coming back out, when on the kickstand.

Archer, where are you at??

in my neighborhood 32 oz is a full quart.

Looks like I'll be getting out the floor jack and a 12" 2x4.
