I looked at some slipons for my 09 ultra but the dealer told me that if you change the pipes you should also have the exhaust ports re-tuned to match. Part of me thinks that it wouldn't matter much, but there is part of me that understands the physics of exhaust pressure waves and such so maybe it makes sense. Is this necessary or overkill?
In most cases, slipons don't make enough difference to cause you to need any tuning, etc. It's when you do full exhaust and/or upgrade the air cleaner that you should think about doing that. Now, if the exhaust is really wide open as far as baffling, then it may be an issue. I called Rush a couple of years ago when I was looking at slipons, and they recommended anything up to 1.75" baffles without having to mod anything else on the bike. They said if I went with 2" baffles, I would probably need to go ahead and do full stage 1, which I ended up doing later anyway. On the other hand, I have a friend that has a Heritage with Rush slipons and he ran his just fine even after he removed the baffles completely and added a SE stage 1 a/c. He still runs them open but now has a PCIII with dyno-tune. He did get a lot of benefit as far as HP and Torque when he had it dyno-tuned but it was running within allowable ranges, believe it or not, when they first put it on the dyno.
I know the feeling. I have Rush slip on on mine and foward controls. I recently added some black heat tape for looks and will be adding a 2" tank lift. Next will be a Big sucker and a PCV. Its definitely addicting.
I LOVE modifying bikes and cars...yes it is expensive, but it is very gratifying once you get the piece or make the piece and take a step back and look at it on your bike..2 weeks after I got my new bike I had gotten V&H BR's..now I have a Heavy Breather and PC-V coming in my direction and cant wait ...Also my first bike my FXR, I think I put drag pipes and other numerous goodies withing a few days..O What A Feeling!!! Good luck with your mod and many many many more to come MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
