Default 06 WG Front wheel on...

06 WG 21" wheel on my 08 Street Bob. Will it work? Is there anything I need to know going in to this swap out? Will my fender bolt back up or do I need a fender off a WG to accommodate the larger wheel? Any advise would be appreciated. Also anyone with this set up I would love to see a picture.

dunno. since the WG wheel is... well, a wide glide. you probably have mid glide on the street bob. maybe without the spacers, or some custom spacers.

it would be nice if you had a buddy or knew someone well enough to swap wheels temporarily. just to see if it would fit.

You'll have to swap the trees out for wide glide trees or Fat Bob trees. The wide glide trees will give you a couple more degrees of rake and the Fat Bob trees won't. Also the 06 is a 1" axle and the 08 is a 25mm.

The Wide Glide hub is too wide for your Mid Glide front end, also the 08 has a metric sized axle. Below is what I did with my 06, I would assume you could do the same but using a 08 Wide Glide wheel and axle. Easiest way would be to lace a Wide Glide rim to your original hub.

Here's what I used: 2006 Wide Glide parts; 21" wheel, upper and lower triple clamps, axle, axle spacers.

From a hardware store: 3/4" chrome spacers and 3/4" longer then original stainless Allen head bolts for mounting the fender, and stainless washers for shimming (.040" for the caliper & .090" for the rotor) to center the caliper over the rotor.

Use other existing hardware from your bike (axle nut and washer, triple clamp pinch bolts, head bearings nuts and washer, fender nuts, forks, etc.).

I bought the parts from Zanotti's back in June of 06.

Here are the Harley Davidson part numbers and Zanotti prices:
P/N 46700-06 Upper Triple Clamp.....$ 65.75
P/N 46386-06 Lower Triple Clamp....$139.83
P/N 40923-06 Front Axle..................$ 28.39
P/N 40926-06 RH/FRT Spacer.............$ 4.58
P/N 40927-06 LH/FRT Spacer.............$ 4.58
Total..$243.13

Update: 4/3/08
Axle spacers above are also available in a chrome tapered version P/N 41410-06 Chrome Tapered Front Wheel Spacer Kit $23.51

Original Wide Glide tire replaced with only 7,300 miles on it (Not much tread left). Replaced it with a Avon Venom AM41 90/90-21, widest tire (3.70") I could find that will fit the Wide Glide Profile rim.

Thanks for the reply but I'm still not 100% on a couple of issues.
It seems the best way to go is to use the spokes and rim from the 06 wide glide wheel and use my hub and axle. Will the different rake have an adverse effect on the handling or does it not matter? What about the front fender? Will the larger wheel fit under the stock Street Bob fender?
Thanks again for everyone's help.

could be wrong but i think the overall diameter of the 21in wheel with tire is the same as a 19in with tire due to a thinner sidewall. Like I said could be wrong.

The easiest way to get a 21" is to buy 21" Sportster spokes and 21" rim, then lace them to your hub. Wide Glide spokes won't work. There is a ton of information available if you perform a search of the Dyna section. Doing it this way, no changes to the trees or fenders is needed.

Here is a picture of a 21" on my 06 FXDI. Same basic set-up as needed for your 09.

Thanks for the heads up on the spokes. I'm trying to decide if buying a friends 21" front wheel set up is the best way to go or if it would it be more cost effective to just shop around for the rim and spokes, as you suggested. My buddy wants $200.00 for both (front & rear) wheels, hubs, and spokes. I'm thinking that for that price, I probably cant go wrong buying them and doing whatever mods are necessary to make it work. This way when I'm done I'll have a full set of wheels to sell.

As mentioned, if you are buying wheels from a wide glide, the front wheel won't work on your front end because of the width of the hub. The only part of his front wheel which will do you any good is the rim (loop).

Basically, you are looking at buying a rear wheel which is the same as what you have now, and a front wheel that is for the most part, worthless to you.

Cost for new parts:

21" rim - 100.00
Stainless spokes and nipples - 120.00
Your existing hub - No Cost
Lacing - No Cost (doing it yourself following the steps in the service manual)
Wheel truing - 40.00
New 21" tire, tube, rim strip, mount and balance - 160.00
