I got the QD windshield with the essentials kit. It was too high for me.. when it was on (lowest on the forks), it was at such a height that I was looking through and over... was annoying as hell. The constant on / off distortion was a headache.
I cut 2" off it and at the lowest placement, it's just above my chin and feels perfect.
The wind isn't an issue because the wave of air hitting the sheild causes it to flow over my head... and takes the bugs with it.
A big rock may be a different story though.
I only use it for long rides though.
+1 on this. I had the same problem and did the same solution. Like you I only use it on long rides and when it is real cold.
Now I am about to convert my front end from a narrow glide to a mid glide and will have to sell this one and get a new one or just eat bugs and freeze.
The top of my windshield stops well below my chin - it would drive me nuts to look through the windshield. I have an older short, detachable HD shield and I'm 6'2". I like it this way, but my shield is too wide and buffeting is bad at 75+. I was thinking about a narrower shield like HD's sport one, or Rifle Solo, or a Windvest. I only need something to take the pressure off my chest so I don't feel like a parachute...
I just installed the 7 3/4" wave windshield by National Cycle and look over it. But I can duck down slightly and dodge the heavy rain fall. It did have quite a bit of distortion in the lower section so I sprayed the inside with black plastic paint to make a band that is about 2 1/2" high to block it.
Both, it all depends on if I am slumped over (through) a little or have my back straight (over). Sometimes I even look around the side of it; rain, fog or covered in bugs while on a long road trip.
It took me years to even accept the fact that a windshield helped at all. Long rides and old age finally convinced me. I be damned if I want to look through it though.
i actually always liked to look through them... till i got a shorty shield not to long ago and started to rock a full face lid, now i like to look over it. here are some shots of both of the set ups
