Default EVO FXD fuel tank query.

I have an EVO FXD tank (don't know the year unfortunately) and all of the small parts to fit the fuel gauge and tank strip but... How do I attach the strip to the tank?!! I have the two black screws which go through the strip(2) (p/n 4363) but although the tank has a bracket (1), there is nothing for the screws to attach to. Should there be a couple of well nuts here?? I have a parts book for a 2000 Dyna and all of the tank parts are the same but I can't see anything on either of the tank pages which shows this bracket. Any ideas?
Also, should the hole in the strip for the filler cap(3) have a trim ring or is it just plain 'as is'?
Thanks in advance for your help! :-)

You need a couple of "Speed Nuts" ... Harley-Davidson Part/Number 8173. It's a folded over flat clip with a nut on the back of it. It slips over the tabs ("1" in your photos) and lines up with the holes ... then the screw from the top of the dash (through "2" in your photos) catches the threads in the speed nut and tightens the assembly down. As the 'clip' turns, it catches on the edge of the tab ("1") and is prevented from turning further, allowing the screw to tighten. The screw that goes with it is P/N 4007.

I had a few Speed Nuts I took off my Jeep bumper that I reused instead of buying the Harley parts ... probably saved $10! I didn't price them to see how much they are at the dealership. You might go to the dealership and take a good look at them ... then go to Home Depot or a hardware store and buy the same thing for a quarter of the price!

Can't help you as far as the trim ring for the gas cap ... do you have the cap? Did you try it to see how it looked with the cap on and no trim ring? Sometimes it's hard to tell. If you have a friendly dealership parts guy, you could just ask him to look it up (assuming they have a parts book for your year bike). Not sure if its your bike's cap, but a couple of the models have a kind of oversized ceramic decorative cap that would probably cover that gap up pretty well. If that is the case, it may not have been made with anything to fill in that gap. If you are an innovator, you might look at getting a rubber or silicone gasket that would fill the gap.

You can find speed nuts at most any auto parts store also, and it'll be cheaper. You just have to know what size (thread) you need.
