Whats the idea about pipe wrap? Why wrap the pipe? Just for the "black" look?

A lot of it is for looks, but it also functions as something of a replacement for heat-shields, but not as effective at dissipating heat. Some will say that the wrap helps improve performance, but I can't testify one way or another.

My wrap took about 20 minutes to stop the smoking. It sucked stopping at all of the stop lights near my house, I thought I was going to die from smoke inhalation. Once I got it on the highway though I didn't notice it since I was moving fast enough and by the time I had made it down the road it had stopped.
