Mine clunked all over the place, then I switched to Mobil1 75-120. Even with the Mobil1, it was still a bit noisy. Recently, I changed to Redline Shockproof, and its smooth as silk now. Sometimes I have to ask myself if I shifted, cause I cant feel or hear it go into gear.
Dont knock the clunk. It really does give you peace of mind, and reminds you that you're riding a Harley
New bikes are really clunky. On my wifes '07 she hated all the banging sounds it made when she shifted and my '06 was quiet. Shes got almost 4,000 miles on it now and has been running Bel Rey Gear Saver since 1,000 and the trans is broken in now and will shift quietly.
Theres an art to shifting though. You have to pull in the clutch while you shift and also not let all the way off the throttle. Also, give it a little more throttle when you downshift as you pull the clutch and shift.
Kinda like floating the gears on a semi but using the clutch. It will be silent if you do it right and have actual gear oil in it instead of motor oil.
It,s weard bought it new in aug 08 had forward controls put on in oct and all the oil changed by harley. Then a long winter i dont remember it being that loud last year theres only 2000 km or 1600 miles.Even when at a stop put it in first gear BANG even tryed holding the clutch for a 30 second the put it in gear same thing BANG. Should i have it checked or live with it??
I had pretty much the same issue with my 07 super glide. I switched the trans to mobil 1 75-140 gear oil. The trans definately smoothed out, neutral is easier to find and no huge clunk when going from neutral to first. As far as your clutch adjustment they shoulda done that at the 1000 mile service. It should have 1/16 to 1/8 inch of freeplay at the clutch lever when you pull on the cable.
