I got mine from East Penn Deka as they are the manufacturer for all Harley batteries. Look up their website and find a local distributor. Mine was $79 and it is an exact fit for the dyna battery. The only difference is the case is white and not black.
The HD battery tender kit is made by Deltran and available on Amazon.com for $25 versus the $50 dealer price.
How hard can the battery be to take out? Undo the remove the Maxi-Plug, remove the battery cover, remove the pos and neg cables, unhook the rubber strap holding it in - then pull the thing out. I haven't looked at my service manual, but I remove my battery cover regularly to check the tightness of the cables and I don't see any mystery there.
Buddy of mine just replaced his with one from an auto parts store on his 03 lowrider and it still cost him $97. I'd be interested, as well, in hearing any advice on brands and places to buy to do it cheaper. I've never had a tender on mine and it still seems to be working fine so far. But, with batteries, it's only a matter of time.
I'd also be interested in any comments about how big or little of a pain it is to change the battery in the FXDC. I read an article about something in AIM a few months back where they did something that required removing the battery and they mentioned how it was sort of a pain. Something to do with completely removing the ground cable from the bike side rather than the battery side before pulling the battery so as not to risk it coming into contact with the + cable when trying to remove it?
That article referred to 05 and earlier dynas. The older ones where harder( lowering battery tray and tricky neg terminal). The new dynas are a joke. Remove cover, then strap, then neg and finally pos. Use the battery tender, the batteries last. My 03 had the original battery in it when I traded in jan 09.
