Default what do I need

I found out the shifter shaft seal is leaking and if anyone could tell me what seals and gaskets I will need once I pull the inner primary off it would be a great help. Also if anyone knows of a link that shows the disassembly/assembly of the primary , my manual doesn't seem very good once the compensator and clutch is removed.

What bike? Do you have a factory service manual? If not get one. When you remove the inner primary there are sealing fasteners that need to be replaced as they are a "one time" fastener.

My 2006 Dyna manual shows the entire breakdown of the primary. Your may have it in different sections. It is not hard but you will need all the gaskets where the cases & covers meet. The new sealing fasteners. I would inspect everything while you are in there, all the shaft seals, bearings, clutch plates, compensator, stator, chain. etc. Plus there is a tsb that covers torquing your comp nut which I think covers the 02 bikes. You will want to pay close attention to the torqueing procedures as well. I always use a very thin coating of permatex black rtv to hold gaskets in place so you might want to get a tube. Don't forget your red & blue loctite. You will need a primary locking tool as well.

I just checked the TSB M-1170 it is for 2003 and up bikes.

Just take your time and if you have a part that is suspect...replace it while you are in there.
