Default Differences

Hi, this morning I sat on a '99 FXDX and I found that the rider position is a lot better than on mine '05 FXDX for my height (5.8 feets): the handlebar is nearer to the seat of 1 1/2" due to a shorter tank. Anybody knows if the frame is different too?

I think the Dyna frame was changed in 04... or was it 06?

The big change to the frame was in 06. The 04's and 05's (well, at least I think the 04's are included) had a longer tank than previous years and slightly shorter seating area as a result. Easiest solution to the issue at hand would be to get a seat that moves you forward an inch or so. I know that on my 05 FXDC, the Sundowner does this when compared to the stock seat. it's a noticeable difference and the bars feel significantly closer and slightly lower relative to the seating position.

You can get a Reach seat, it moves you up an inch.

I had a Reach seat...Awful! Drapes your "boys" over the back of the tank. I rode 100 miles up to the Olympic Peninsula to visit friends one day. By the time I got there, I was SERIOUSLY dreading the 100 mile return trip. Bought a HD Touring seat (wonderful) and sold the Reach here or on ebay. Just my $0.02.

So, do you know if it's possible to mount the earlier shorter tank on my 2005?

It may be possible, but that seems like the most expensive possible solution. Either bars with more pullback or a Sundowner seat should put you in pretty much the same spot as you felt on the 99.
