Ok, so a few weeks ago I gunned it to pass a car and noticed a horrendous racket come from the engine once I got back down to cruising RPMs. It went away, but now returns every time I go above 4K on RPMs.
It will go away after different amounts of time, return if I hit the engine hard, give me tons of noise, audible exhaust change (popping plus increased RPM), check engine light, then go away at some point.
The dealer told me not to worry about it...could be lifters...not under warranty because of the cams, and go away.
I would do an oil pressure check on your engine first to make sure you are getting oil to the top end. Then you want to be sure the noise you are hearing is not detonation as your timing may be off and you could do some serious damage. If both of those check out then you might consider getting a different set of rocker arms and lifters that go with your cams.
Check engine light comes on and goes out..... so what was the code or codes?
The dealer could very well be correct and your lifters are not holding oil at higher rpms. If that is the case I wouldn't be surprised if new hydraulic lifters still acted the same and solids cured the problem. Solids are always superior in performance vs hydraulics, downfall is they need to be adjusted every so often.
Does the Thundermax cause the CEL to come on, in some fashion for error codes?
My first thoughts are pre-detonation... but that doesn't really hold for sitting at a light. Could be different reasons tho. Sitting at the light could be low oil pressure. While going uphill could be pre-detonation (knock).
As mentioned before, I'd get your oil pressure checked. Low oil pressure could be indicative of some really bad mojo going on.
