Cool Bonehead move of the month

Here I am just cruising through my 5K service today, got the tunes on in the garage....had ridden to the dealer for parts this morning, great ride....just about finished..... what the hell do I do? I misread a f*qin torque setting...

... and you know that feeling.... "It should be starting to tighten... I'll give just a tiny bit more..... oh.....oh no... it's moving freely now... and look -a little corkscrew of metal"

SOAB, stripped out my clutch adjuster plate. Cheap friggin part...14 bucks... and nobody has one. Why? Nobody frikkin strips theirs out that's why.

I'm so f*k'n mad at myself right now. One of the best f*k'n weekends ever, weather-wise and now I'm sitting on my ****.. and kicking the hell out of it

Rich, mine did the exact same thing using the correct torque setting. It's a bad part from the get go. I made my own replacement. I'm suprised more people don't do it. It's a POS IMHO

I convert all my torque requirements to nm. so I don't fubar parts. It is easier.

Yeah, I'm seriously considering making a replacement myself- more from the standpoint that no one has one. I'm waiting on word back from the Kennewick HD shop, they say they have one....but can't find it yet..... :|

That's gotta be some of the softest steel I've ever seen...... still.

I made the replacement, tapped it then had it nitrated where I work. I will never have a problem with that particular part again.

Okay, back on the road....after finding out no dealer within 3 hours (4 of 'em) stock this part, and nobody in these local towns is open where I might have found some 1/4" steel.... I took stock of what I did have. I found some steel tubing in my stock 'o stuff, cut off a 3/8" piece, dusted off my little MIG, and welded it into the plate, ground the welds down to fit, drilled it out and tapped it.

Finished the service ( plugs, belt adjustment, cable lube....etc) took it out on the road..... running fine. I'll go ahead and order a new one, but in the meantime, I'm still riding.

Sounds like me when I misread inch-lbs and torqued down my exhaust flange bolts to foot-lbs.

Realized what I did and couldn't get them back off and ended up stripping them...had to go buy a special set of sockets for that express purpose. Sucks I know.

i gave my AN/BS bolts ftlb instead of inlb and cracked the backing plate! Once wasn't bad enough!I decided it wasn't sooooo bad and started putting it back on and cracked it again only this time on another hole! eeeeee!! I was ready to hang myself! AN replaced it for me so I waited 2 weeks and paid 30$ shipping plus 20 for customs! Don't feel so bad Archer!!

I learned a long time ago to never do any work on your bike right before a schedule ride (or a good weekend). It never fails, something happens and you can't get a part or get it fixed.

Last time was a new tire. Had it installed on a Friday, then leaving for a two day, 1000 mile trip on Saturday. Get up Sat am, drove 1/2 mile and noticed tire doesn't seem right, low on air. Fill it up, ride a few miles, check it and it's almost flat again.

Long story short, runined my two day ride. Now if Ihave a big ride scheduled, I do any work at least a week ahead of time, just to make sure all is well.
